What I’ve done so far

School is about to reopen already. How time flies. For this past week, I have not been doing anything much besides working. The restaurant has been quite busy this week and there is not enough staff. I have opted to do the afternoon shift because I have been sleeping in ever since the holidays started.

Friday was my sister’s birthday and I cannot believe she is 5 years old already. Where did all the time go? I hope she grows up to be a fine, beautiful girl. In honour of her birthday, I bought her a birthday cake. The cake is a vanilla sponge cake covered with chocolate flecks and decorated with strawberries and a chocolate fondant heart. Fondant is made of corn syrup, confectioners sugar and water and it can be molded into any shape and size.

Today is the start of the fasting month. I hope this month goes by smoothly. I also cannot wait for Hari Raya to come. I set the alarm for 4.50am but just could not wake up. I finally woke up after Mum shouted at me by then it was 5.07am, I only had about 20 minutes to eat. We actually have to stop eating 10minutes before the time for the morning prayer. All I ate today was 2 biscuits, a cup of tea and some water.

So, in my conclusion, the holidays were a bit dull and tedious for me. But I hope the next time round, the holidays will be more relaxing.

The Undomestic goddess book review

A few weeks ago I borrowed a book called The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella and I have been reading a few pages everyday. I have covered about two-thirds of the book and I absolutely love it.

The story talks about how a high-powered City lawyer makes a mistake so huge that it absolutely destroys her career.

Samantha Sweeting is a 29-year old City lawyer in London. And she works for Carter Spink Law Firm. All she has ever wanted is to be a partner in the company. She works all her hours , has no social life at all. On the day of her partnership announcement she discovers that she was supposed to register her colleague’s client at Companies House to be a registered company. The hitch is that she has missed the 21 days due date. The company has now gone bust and they have lost £50 million. She panics and decides to run away. She ends up at a strangers house outside of London and they mistake her to be the new housekeeper. She now tries to make do with her new life.

It was hilarious to read about how Samantha was juggling the new job especially since she does not know much about how to function anything. The story was interesting and engaging too. There was once when she had been assigned to cook for a fancy dinner for her employers. She provided a fancy menu but she did not know that they would want to have that menu as dinner that night. She was so frantic in the kitchen try to juggle everything and she ended up burning almost everything. The gardener helped her out though but later on, she gave her employes the excuse that the equipments in the kitchen were not good enough and as a result, they did not allow her to produce dishes of excellent quality.

The last 7 weeks…

So, I have a task to write about the seven last weeks of my life. I will not write all of it here since you can find more about my life on my other posts.

The last seven weeks have been exciting, crazy, scary and filled with adrenalin. Life as a polytechnic student has been somewhat of a challenge because there is so much to keep up with. I honestly never thought that things would turn out the way they have but I am grateful for whatever has happened. From the littlest thing like someone holding the door open for me to the major things like scoring well in tests.

There were many days when I felt like just giving up. I just did not have the energy to get up and get moving. I would lie there on my bed, pondering. After sometime,I would just get up. I would constantly remind myself about my dream of owning a bakery. I would just keep telling myself that all these hard work will pay off one day.

Then of course, there were tests. Some tests would just scare the hell out of me. Every morning, I would be early for class. I will sit outside with Ruth and Chengyi and whoever was there. Just beginning my morning. I would first check Facebook, Twitter, Hotmail, Np Mel, Yahoo and Eonline. If time permitted, I would go on to Huffington Post and maybe watch a couple Youtube videos. Bus rides to school were not always fantastic. I do not fall asleep easily when I am awake. So because it was hard to sleep, I would study the lecture notes. If I had a reflection journal to write for behavioral science, I would write and think. Bus rides on Thursday were spent on writing my blog entry. I try to make full use of time. So I would just write about my week on ‘Notes’. When I was ready to post I would copy and paste whatever I wrote before publishing it.

I have even visited all the canteens on campus. Munch has the best western food. I usually take Chicken Cutlet because the chicken is crispy and warm. I managed to try the Mee Goreng at Canteen 4 while it does not taste that great, it still taste nice. And canteen 4 sells snacks like chocolate chip cookies and hello panda. Wow! I wish Makan place or Munch had one too. Makan place is where I hang most. I rotate between chicken rice and Indian food mostly. Today, I tried a new stall which sells chicken curry rice. The serving was really generous and I had a tough time finishing it up. I have yet to visit the canteen at blk 18 but I hope to do so soon. Instead, I have found a little nice comfort in the grocery/necessity store at block 5. It sells all drinks, lots of snacks and stationaries too.

These days, I barely get time to exercise. I really need to find time because I am starting to grow huge. My tummy is bulging and even a little bit of running makes me tired easily.

I better stop now, because I have got a few errands to run and I need to be up early tomorrow. So, good night.

And we approach the holidays soon

It is the last week of school before common tests start next week. I am worried about the tests but the great news is that I only have Bio and Math test and after I am free!!!

Monday started off well. We mostly did revision. And had a Bio competition. In groups of 5, we were supposed to guess the answers to Bio questions. After Bio, lunch next. During lunch, all of us talked about the Little India field trip that happened the day before. We had to interview foreign workers during the trip about their life in Singapore and find out how Serangoon Road has changed after the riot. It was intimidating at first but slowly, we just forgot and were more focused on doing as many interviews as possible.

Maths was a breeze. I finally finished up my tutorial worksheet. And then got started on the new revision worksheets. When I got back, it was almost time for dinner. So, after a short rest, I had dinner. My mum left at around 9pm to go over to Grandma’s as some guests had come to visit. Since Mum, my brother and sister went over, I used the time to do some studying. I managed to cover 2 topics of Bio.

It was almost midnight when Mum returned. I stayed up for her till she returned. The next morning, was Mum’s birthday. I almost forgot till I looked at the messages that were coming in for my Mum. I quickly wished her then. I had behavioral sciences first. Then all of us left school, some stocked together while others went in separate directions. I went over to the restaurant since my Mum and Uncle were not around. I helped out for 2 hours before I left for the Gardens by the Bay field trip. On the way to the MRT, I was stopped by a young lady asked me if I was willing to write an inspiring message to the folks at Susco home. Since I had time to spare, I thought ‘Why Not?’. I wrote, ” Stay strong. BE BRAVE and let nothing get in your way!”

I got to Bayfront earlier than expected so I took the time to walk around the Shoppes since I had never been there before. Seeing all those big designer names, I was hyperventilating. I mean, I have only seen their products on the net but now to be able to see those products up close, was surreal. There was Gucci, Michael Kors, Chanel, Guess, Raoul, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tommy Hilfiger, Dior, Burberry etc.

Wednesday was an easy day. I only had Math class. Once school finished, I headed home and brought the maid for medical check-up. I then spent the next two hours doing research for my in-class writing assignment for Behavioral Sciences. I spent the evening with my cousins. I wanted to sleep but my brother wanted my mum to read stories to him. They took forever to finish reading. And when they did, I just fell asleep so easily. I slept quite peacefully the whole night and in the morning, I did not feel like waking up. But I forced myself to since I had school.

The rest of the day was a blur. The English test went well, I think. I chose argumentative. In the past year, I have started to develop a thing for argumentative essays. I was introduced argumentative by a friend of mine. He had always been doing argumentative essays and then he gave me his reasoning that argumentative allow you to tell the story with so much detail that people can just choose what they want. I did one argumentative. Then another and another.

At tuition classes, we would literally have a write-off to see who could write the same argumentative essay better. Our teacher would then look through our essays and go through each points and give us do and don’t tips.

For he behavioral science test, it was hard to get started at first. I just thought long and hard about it, so I started off with my name and I explained what it meant. I went on to write the expectations society has from different genders. I just wrote and wrote. When I almost got to the end, I saw that I had written over a thousand words. I truly thought that the computer was lying. After typing the assignment, I sent it to safe assignment to check it against plagiarism. The software did say that I had plagiarized but I did put quotation marks on those sentences that were not mine and even put the website link.

I am sorry if this post is a little early but my Uncle’s wedding is on Saturday and there a tonne of things to be done. Tomorrow, we need to put the finishing touches and get started with the henna ceremony. I will not be around at home tomorrow because I need to be at the restaurant to help out with the afternoon crowd. Tomorrow is also my last lesson of sports (rock climbing) and personal development for the term.
